Sheer Spectacle is a queer-led, project-based dance theater company based in New York City. Founded in 2022 by Brooklyn-based artists Kali Petrizzo and Lily Mello, the company builds emotionally volatile and visually lush performance works at the intersection of performance art, physical theater, and ecstatic expression. Rooted in a creative partnership that began at the University of the Arts, where Kali and Lily earned their BFAs in Dance, Sheer Spectacle emerged from their shared artistic vision. Their work builds immersive, theatrical environments that attend to intimacy, worship, memory, queer desire, and the states of unraveling and becoming. Recent works by Sheer Spectacle include Ripped Tights, Stoned Heart (2022) self-produced at the Mass Building, Philadelphia, PA; I Spit Out the Gold (2022) commissioned by the University of the Arts at The Annenberg Center for Performing Arts, Philadelphia, PA and 92NY, New York, NY; Kissing Friends (2023) at IceBox Project Space, Philadelphia, PA and The Center at West Park, New York, NY; and On Adoration (2025) at Judson Memorial Church, New York, NY. Their performances have also been presented at Gibney, Headlong Dance Theater, Philadelphia Dance Theater, and Mascher Space Cooperative and featured in Cannonball Festival, Philadelphia Fringe Festival, EstroGenius Festival, Evolution Dance Festival, and Future Dance Festival. Residencies include Motive Brooklyn (2025) and the CUNY Dance Initiative at JCAL/York College (2025). Through these projects, Sheer Spectacle continues to cultivate work that pulses with vulnerability and theatricality, constructing dreamlike worlds where power, fantasy, devotion, and dissolution collide.
